The Vanishing Child: Queerspawn in Canadian Queer Histories (10/03/25)
Where are the children in Canadian queer history? Why have so few academic historians considered the relationship between queer histories and histories of children and youth? Drawing on my own PhD research, I consider both the methodological challenges and possibilities of highlighting the place of children and childhood in queer lives.

Opacity as Method: Black Girlhood, Surveillance, and the Aesthetics of Refusal (10/08/25)
This talk presents a selection of artworks that use visual strategies of refusal and opacity to redefine Black girls’ agency amid racialized surveillance and policing in Canada and the U.S. Inspired by the Black feminist interventions of Saidiya Hartman’s critical fabulation and Christina Sharpe’s wake work, de Jesús’s practice reimagines what it means to bear witness to Black life, death, and suffering while simultaneously navigating the representational paradox of engaging these images to achieve social justice. In doing so, these artworks refuse to reproduce the visual economies of anti-Black spectacle and insist on alternative ways of seeing that center care, make the embeddedness of racism legible, and reclaim the everyday as a site of radical Black girl presence.

This conference located members of The Playground within a conversation related to Drawing Queer and Trans Kinship: Understanding Family through Children's Art. It did so with the understanding that a coalitional politics and a capacious approach to the limits of discipline can better critical childhood studies.
